CIBIL dispute: wrong credit score or report? How to fix it

Updated 2026-10 · General information, not legal advice.

Credit bureaus and lenders must correct wrong information. Under RBI rules a dispute should be resolved within 30 days, with compensation for delay.

When to use this

  • A closed loan or card shows as active or overdue
  • An account you never took appears on your report
  • Your score fell for a reason you cannot explain

Step by step

  1. 1

    Get your credit report

Download your report from each credit bureau. You are entitled to a free full report once a year from each.

  2. 2

    Raise the dispute online

Use the dispute option with the bureau and give the lender's name, account number and proof such as a closure letter.

  3. 3

    Write to the lender too

Ask the lender to correct the data it reported and send the bureau an update. Keep the complaint number.

  4. 4

    Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman

If it is not resolved in 30 days, file free at cms.rbi.org.in. Delay beyond 30 days can attract compensation under RBI rules.
