Income tax refund delayed? How to complain in India
Updated 2026-10 · General information, not legal advice.
Refunds usually get stuck for simple reasons: a bank account that is not pre-validated, a mismatch in the return, or a pending demand. Check these first.
When to use this
- The refund status shows processed but money has not arrived
- The refund is pending for a long time after filing
- You got a refund failure message
Step by step
- 1
Check the refund status
Log in to the income tax e-filing portal and see the status of your return and refund.
- 2
Fix the bank account
Make sure the account is pre-validated and linked to your PAN, and that the name and IFSC are correct. Request a refund reissue if it failed.
- 3
Check for a pending demand or notice
A pending demand or an e-proceeding notice can hold back the refund. Respond on the portal.
- 4
Raise a grievance
File a grievance on the e-filing portal (e-Nivaran), and if it is not resolved, use the CPGRAMS portal under the Ministry of Finance.
Key facts
- Pre-validate your bank account before filing
- Respond to every notice within the time given
- Shikayat does not give tax advice; ask a chartered accountant for your case
