Zero FIR explained: file at any police station in India

Updated 2026-10 · General information, not legal advice.

A Zero FIR is an FIR registered at any police station, even if the offence happened somewhere else. The station must register it and then send it to the station that has jurisdiction.

When to use this

  • The crime happened in another city or area
  • The local police say "this is not our area"
  • You need to report a serious offence quickly

Step by step

  1. 1

Go to the nearest police station

Ask for a Zero FIR and explain what happened clearly with dates and places.

  2. 2

    Give a written complaint

Hand in a written complaint and ask for a receipt or a copy of the FIR.

  3. 3

    Check the FIR number

A Zero FIR has the number 0. After transfer, the new station gives a regular FIR number.

  4. 4

    Follow up on the transfer

Ask which station it is sent to and keep in touch. If the police refuse, send the complaint to the Superintendent of Police.

Common questions

Can a police station refuse because the crime happened elsewhere?

No. For a cognizable offence it should register the FIR and transfer it.

Is a Zero FIR a full FIR?

Yes. It is a full FIR, only registered at a station that is not the final one to investigate.
