Sent money to the wrong UPI ID or number? How to try to get it back

A wrong transfer is not automatically reversed, but banks can ask the receiving bank to request the money back. Act quickly and keep the transaction details.
When to use this
- You typed the wrong UPI ID, number or amount
- Money went to an unknown account
- The receiver has not returned the money
Step by step

Save the details
Screenshot the transaction ID (UTR), amount, time and the receiver's UPI ID or name.

Raise a dispute in your UPI app
Use the app's "report a problem" option and note the complaint number.

Contact your bank
Write to your bank and ask it to approach the receiving bank. Visit the branch if you can.

Use the NPCI dispute channel and the RBI Ombudsman
If your bank does not resolve it, raise a dispute on NPCI's UPI dispute system, and after 30 days file at cms.rbi.org.in. If it was a scam, call 1930.
