Wrong electricity bill? How to complain in India
Updated 2026-10 · General information, not legal advice.
Electricity complaints follow a set ladder: first the distribution company, then its Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum, and then the Electricity Ombudsman in your state.
When to use this
- The bill is much higher than usual or for a wrong period
- The meter is faulty or was changed without notice
- Power was cut or a new connection is delayed
Step by step
- 1
Check the bill and your meter
Compare readings and past bills. Take clear photos of the meter reading and the bill.
- 2
Complain to the discom
Use the customer care number, app or office and note the complaint number. Ask for the bill to be corrected or the meter tested.
- 3
Go to the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum
If the discom does not resolve it in time, take it to its Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum.
- 4
Appeal to the Electricity Ombudsman
If the Forum's decision does not satisfy you, appeal to the Electricity Ombudsman of your state. Check the time limit for your state.
Key facts
- Rules and time limits differ by state
- Keep the bill, meter photos and complaint number
- Pay the undisputed part of the bill if the rules of your state require it, to avoid disconnection
