ATM debited money but gave no cash? How to get it back and compensation

Updated 2026-10 · General information, not legal advice.

A failed ATM withdrawal should be reversed automatically within a few working days. If it is not, the bank owes you the money and, under RBI rules, compensation for each day of delay.

When to use this

  • The ATM did not give cash but your account was debited
  • The reversal has not come after several working days
  • The bank rejected your complaint

Step by step

  1. 1

    Keep the slip and statement

Keep the ATM slip if any, the SMS and your bank statement showing the debit.

  2. 2

    Complain to your bank

Report at once through the bank's customer care or branch and get a complaint number. Do not delay.

  3. 3

    Wait the working-day limit

Banks must usually reverse failed transactions within about 5 working days. After that, claim the compensation in writing.

  4. 4

    Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman

If still unresolved, file free at cms.rbi.org.in with your complaint number and statement.

Key facts

  • Under RBI rules the bank pays ₹100 per day for delay beyond the limit
  • Report quickly; there is a time limit to report a failed transaction
  • Using another bank's ATM does not change your rights
