How to file an FIR online in India

Many state police forces let you report certain offences online. Online information is treated as an FIR once you confirm it, and serious offences can still be reported in person or by phone.
When to use this
- You cannot go to the police station right away
- Your phone, vehicle or documents were stolen or lost
- You want to report a cyber crime
Step by step

Find your state police portal or app
Search for your state police citizen services portal. Not every state or offence is available online.

Fill in the details
Give your details, the date, time and place, a clear account of what happened and any suspects, and upload proof.

Confirm and get an acknowledgement
Submit and note the acknowledgement number. The information is generally to be signed by you at the station within 3 days.

Cyber crimes and online fraud are reported at cybercrime.gov.in, and financial fraud on 1930.
